Arts & Crafts Movement

The Arts and Crafts Movement was an international design movement that flourished between 1860 and 1910. The movement developed first and most fully in the British Isles, but spread across the British Empire and to the rest of Europe and North America. It was largely a reaction against the perceived impoverished state of the decorative arts at the time and the conditions in which they were produced. It stood for traditional craftsmanship using simple forms and often applied medieval, romantic or folk styles of decoration. It advocated economic and social reform and has been said to be essentially anti-industrial.

Production of pianos increased in the very early twentieth century and during the 1920s, Chappell purchased several highly regarded English piano manufacturing firms, including Allison & Co., Collard & Collard and John Strohmenger & Sons. For a long time, the Chappell name dominated the UK piano market, along with Kemble, Knight and Welmar, and is widely regarded as one of Britain’s finest manufacturers, with a reputation for high quality, long-lasting instruments. Their owner Sir Alfred Knight was a stickler for quality – when he left the standard of the manufacture went downhill.

This has taken place under the careful supervision of world respected piano technician, Klaus Fenner. Fenner co-developed the Imperial German scale keyboard which appears on all Reid Sohn pianos.

Quality spruce and air-dried maple are combined with tempered, nickel-plated pins, German hammer felt and laminated German pin blocks. This combination of Indonesian manufacturing and German engineering has produced affordable pianos that hold their weight when it comes to tone and touch. Rittmuller piano

Rittmuller UP11 OR2  £2,450.00

Ritmuller pianos are made by Pearl River in Indonesia. They offer good value for money and improved build and tonal quality in comparison to older Indonesian built pianos.

Pearl River controls every step of the manufacturing process, from the selection of woods to the crafting of actions, soundboards, wet sand-cast plates, and every other integral part of the piano. This control ensures a consistently high quality piano true to the exact scale-design.

HIGH QUALITY, SEASONED HARDWOODS

While others often use less costly woods “select hardwoods” in their “consumer-grade” pianos, Pearl River uses only the best woods for each application in every piano made.
Grand Piano rims are made from Walnut, a dense hardwood that allows for our lower tension scale design. Lower tension scale design results in a warmer, richer tone with longer sustain, and is used in the world’s finest pianos. Bridges and pin-blocks are crafted from Rock Maple, and tapered soundboards are created from close-grained, high-quality northern Spruce (100%). The use of high quality woods is critical when making high quality musical instruments.

Hardwood-PearlRiver-V2
ACCLIMATIZED FOR WORLDWIDE MARKETS

Pearl River takes pride in using state-of-the-art kilns to dry their woods. Both before and after the kiln drying, woods are expertly cured to specific moisture contents, which reduces the natural tendency for wood to swell and contract with humidity fluctuation. With over 8,000 moving parts, a piano’s woods must be “seasoned” to ensure reliability wherever the piano ends up living!

WET SAND CAST PLATES

The plate is a foundation of a piano, the strength that supports the incredible tension placed on the instrument by its strings. Pearl River uses high-quality “pig iron” which is melted in foundries and poured in wet sand moulds. Some manufacturers only use this method in their most expensive models. Ritmuller uses this method for every piano they make. Wet Sand Cast plates provide more mass for strength, and do not produce undesirable harmonic feedback like “vacuum processed” plates.

TAPERED SOUNDBOARDS

The soundboard of a piano is its voice. The careful selection of wood and the design of each piano’s soundboard are crucial in creating a piano’s tone. Pearl River’s 100% close-grained spruce soundboards are tapered, allowing improved flexibility. The freedom of movement from our tapered soundboards provides for greater dynamic range and improved sustain.

CUT-THREAD TUNING PINS

Pearl River pianos use “cut-thread” tuning pins, a superior method to “stamping” the thread as some manufacturers do. “Cut-thread” tuning pins provide more precision and control to the technician, allowing for better and longer-lasting tuning.

Rosler Piano

Rosler Piano  £1,995.00

Production of upright and grand pianos under Rösler name dates back to the second half of the 19th century. 1878 is considered the official date when Gustav Rösler founded the company, building in Česká Lípa one of the most significant factories of its kind in the entire Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. After his death in 1891 his wife ran the firm, until in 1899 her brother Ludwig Gatter bought the firm and gradually expanded and modernised it. The firm was represented on the domestic market in all large retailers, and was successful abroad as well. Its sales area included the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Great Britain and South Africa.

The firm developed further after the creation of the Czechoslovak Republic, when L. Gatter’s sons took it over. Rösler instruments were exported to 18 countries. After the Second World War the factory was occupied, with Antonín Duda, a specialist from Dalibor Pianos in Zákolany, being appointed national manager. At that time the company was producing as many as 10 pianos a month. The firm continued to prosper until the February putsch of 1948, when it was nationalised.

After 1993 Rösler was bought by PETROF, Europe’s leading piano maker. Today, PETROF still produces Rösler pianos, making active commercial use of the name.

Weber modern

Weber W121 Modern  £2,850.00

Weber pianos were a British maker who produced very good pianos. Today, Weber pianos are made by Young Chang in Korea. The pianos they made are of the highest of quality and were made to be robust and musical, reflecting their main design which was for melodic longevity, musicality, and with cabinets that are well made and aesthetically pleasing to look at.

The tone is warm, especially in the bass, and the action firm but even. Young Chang have definitely been aiming to manufacture pianos that have a more ‘European’ sound, with Yamaha-esque brightness eschewed for warmer tones. This is most probably the legacy of Joseph Pramberger, a former vice president from Steinway & Sons and an experienced piano designer, who joined the Young Chang company in 1995. Pramberger brought many innovations to piano design, including the “Platinum Touch Action” and the patented asymmetrically tapered soundboard.

Many education institutions still use classic Welmar pianos from the 1970’s. The company ceased trading in the early 2000’s, and as with many other good British piano manufacturers buying one of these pianos is considered to be a very good investment as we will never see the likes of them again.
